Abstract
Accidental introductions of aquatic mollusks have become more common since the increase in traffic and speed of transoceanic crossings, the extension of the European canal system and the availability of commercially popular species in aquaculture, garden ponds and aquaria, from which they may have escaped. The port of Antwerp is a commercial gateway to Europe with ample facilities and services. Hence, it is not surprising that quite often introductions of exotic freshwater mollusks are first noticed in its hinterland: the province of Antwerp.
