On the 28th of August 2001, the MUMM surveillance aircraft made observation of a very intensive and extensive red tide around the anchorage area in front of Zeebrugge. The red tide was caused by the ciliate Mesodinium rubrum. When intact, these organisms are of an intense red colour. When they break up, they immediately turn to green.
