Abstract
74 dead and dying specimens of the arched swimming krab Liocarcinus arcuatus have been observed on january 29th, 1994 on the Belgian shore between Oostduinkerke and Koksijde. Normally the species is rather rarely washed ashore on the Belgian coast. The sample comprises 58 males, 13 females and 3 incomplete specimens. All crabs seem to be adults. The carapace width of males ranges from 25.7 to 34.9 mm (average carapace width = 30.6 mm) and the carapace width of females ranges from 22.5 to 29.5 mm (average carapace width = 26.6 mm). 98 % of males and 23 % of females have barnacles (often very large) and/or bryozoans growing on their body.
