Abstract
This thesis examined the spatial and temporal dynamics of Mtoni-Kijichi mangroves (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) using field survey and remote sensing. A plot based field survey was carried out in July-August 2005 to assess the current vegetation structure and regeneration of the forest. Long-term forest changes were examined using black and white historic aerial photographs (dating back to 1967) and a panchromatic IKONOS satellite image of 2005. Remotely sensed material was visually interpreted to produce vegetation maps and change analysis in a Geographic InformationSystem (GIS) environment. Analysis showed that large areas of mangrove were cleared for charcoal and salt production. On the other hand new areas were colonized mainly by mangrove species Sonneratia alba, resulting in net loss of 40.5 hectares of mangrove between 1967 and 2005.
